शौनक ने पूछा: राजाओं में व्याघ्र राजा जनमेजय ने सभी साँपों के नष्ट होने तक साँप-यज्ञ का निर्णय क्यों लिया?
Why did Āstīka, supreme among the Brāhmana-s, save the snakes from the blazing fire?
ब्राह्मणों में सर्वोच्च आस्तिक ने साँपों को धधकती आग से क्यों बचाया?

Whose son was the king who performed the snake-sacrifice? Whose son was that best of the Brāhmana-s? Tell us.
सर्प-यज्ञ करने वाला राजा किसका पुत्र था? वह श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण पुत्र किसका था? हमें बताओ।

सूत उवाच महदाख्यानमास्तीकं यत्रैतत्प्रोच्यते द्विज सर्वमेतदशेषेण शृणु मे वदतां वर
Sauti said: O best of the Brāhmana-s! O best of the speakers! I shall recount in all its details the great story of Āstīka, as it was told. Listen.
सौति ने कहा: हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! हे वक्ताश्रेष्ठ! मैं आस्तिक की महान कहानी का पूरे विवरण में वर्णन करूँगा, जैसा कि बताया गया था। सुनना।
Śaunaka said: I wish to hear in detail the beautiful story of the ancient and famous Brāhmaṇa sage Āstīka.
शौनक ने कहा: मैं प्राचीन और प्रसिद्ध ब्राह्मण ऋषि आस्तिक की सुंदर कहानी विस्तार से सुनना चाहता हूं।
Sauti said: The wise know this ancient story as history. It was recounted by Kṛṣṇā Dvaipāyana to the inhabitants of the Naimiṣāranya.
सौती ने कहा: बुद्धिमान लोग इस प्राचीन कहानी को इतिहास के रूप में जानते हैं। इसे कृष्ण द्वैपायन ने नैमिषारण्य के निवासियों को सुनाया था।

पूर्वं प्रचोदितः सूतः पिता मे लोमहर्षणः शिष्यो व्यासस्य मेधावी ब्राह्मणैरिदमुक्तवान्
At the request of the Brāhmana-s, my learned father Lomaharṣaṇa, Vyāsa's disciple and a sūta, once narrated it.
ब्राह्मणों के अनुरोध पर, मेरे विद्वान पिता लोमहर्षण, व्यास के शिष्य और एक सूत, ने एक बार इसे सुनाया था।
O Śaunaka! I was present at the time. Since you have asked me, I shall recount the story of Āstīka exactly as I heard it.
हे शौनक! मैं उस वक्त मौजूद था. चूंकि आपने मुझसे पूछा है, इसलिए मैं आस्तिक की कहानी बिल्कुल वैसे ही सुनाऊंगा जैसे मैंने सुनी थी।

आस्तीकस्य पिता ह्यासीत्प्रजापतिसमः प्रभुः ब्रह्मचारी यताहारस्तपस्युग्रे रतः सदा
Āstīka's father was as powerful and mighty as Prajāpati. He was celibate and was always engaged in great austerities.
आस्तिक के पिता प्रजापति के समान ही शक्तिशाली और पराक्रमी थे। वे ब्रह्मचारी थे और सदैव घोर तपस्या में लीन रहते थे।
He was controlled in his food and never spilt his semen. He was known by the name of Jaratkāru. He was the chief among mendicants, righteous and rigid in his vows.
वह अपने भोजन पर नियंत्रण रखते थे और कभी भी अपना वीर्य नहीं गिराते थे। उन्हें जरत्कारु के नाम से जाना जाता था। वह भिक्षुकों में अग्रणी, धर्मात्मा और अपने व्रत में दृढ़ था।
Once, when he was travelling, he saw his ancestors hanging upside down in a great cave, their feet pointing upwards and their heads down.
एक बार, जब वह यात्रा कर रहा था, उसने देखा कि उसके पूर्वज एक बड़ी गुफा में उल्टे लटके हुए थे, उनके पैर ऊपर की ओर और सिर नीचे की ओर थे।
On seeing them Jaratkāru asked, "Who are you, hanging upside down in this cave,
उन्हें देखकर जरत्कारु ने पूछा, "तुम कौन हो, जो इस गुफा में उलटे लटके हुए हो?"
tethered with a rope made of gras-s that has been eaten away by rats who secretly live in this cave?"
घास से बनी रस्सी से बंधा हुआ, जिसे इस गुफा में गुप्त रूप से रहने वाले चूहों ने खा लिया है?"
The ancestors replied: "We are riṣi-s rigid in our vows, known as the yāyāvara-s. O Brāhmaṇa! We are descending into the earth because we have no descendants.
पूर्वजों ने उत्तर दिया: "हम ऋषि अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में दृढ़ हैं, जिन्हें यायावर के नाम से जाना जाता है। हे ब्राह्मण! हम पृथ्वी पर अवतरित हो रहे हैं क्योंकि हमारा कोई वंशज नहीं है।
We only have one descendant known as Jaratkāru. But unfortunate as we are, that unfortunate one has adopted the path of austerities.
हमारा केवल एक ही वंशज है जिसे जरत्कारु के नाम से जाना जाता है। लेकिन हम अभागे हैं, उस अभागे ने तपस्या का मार्ग अपनाया है।

न स पुत्राञ्जनयितुं दारान्मूढश्चिकीर्षति तेन लम्बामहे गर्ते संतानप्रक्षयादिह
Therefore, that fool does not think of having a wife so as to get a son. It is for that reason that we are hanging upside down in this cave, because we are decaying.
अत: वह मूर्ख पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिये पत्नी रखने की बात नहीं सोचता। यही कारण है कि हम इस गुफा में उलटे लटके हुए हैं, क्योंकि हम सड़ रहे हैं।
Like sinners, despite having a protector, we are unprotected. O excellent one! Who are you that you are sorrowing for us like a relative?
पापियों की तरह हम भी रक्षक होते हुए भी असुरक्षित हैं। हे उत्कृष्ट ! तुम कौन हो जो हमारे लिये सम्बन्धी की भाँति दुःख उठा रहे हो?
O Brāhmaṇa! We wish to know who you are that you are standing before us mourning, though we deserve to be mourned?"
हे ब्राह्मण! हम जानना चाहते हैं कि आप कौन हैं कि हमारे सामने खड़े होकर शोक मना रहे हैं, जबकि हम शोक मनाने के पात्र हैं?”
Jaratkāru replied: "I am Jaratkāru himself and you are my fathers and grandfathers who have come before me. Tell me what I should do."
जरत्कारु ने उत्तर दिया: "मैं स्वयं जरत्कारु हूं और आप मेरे पिता और दादा हैं जो मुझसे पहले आए हैं। मुझे बताएं कि मुझे क्या करना चाहिए।"

पितर ऊचुः यतस्व यत्नवांस्तात संतानाय कुलस्य नः आत्मनोऽर्थेऽस्मदर्थे च धर्म इत्येव चाभिभो
The ancestors said: "For your sake and for us, endeavour your best to have a son so that our lineage can continue. O exalted one! Such is the law.
पूर्वजों ने कहा: "तुम्हारे और हमारे लिए, एक पुत्र प्राप्त करने का भरसक प्रयास करो ताकि हमारा वंश आगे बढ़ सके। हे महान! यही कानून है।"

न हि धर्मफलैस्तात न तपोभिः सुसंचितैः तां गतिं प्राप्नुवन्तीह पुत्रिणो यां व्रजन्ति ह
From the fruits of virtuous action and from the stored-up merits of austerities one does not obtain the gains accrued by having a son.
पुण्य कर्म के फल से तथा तपस्या के संग्रहित पुण्यों से पुत्र प्राप्ति से प्राप्त होने वाला लाभ प्राप्त नहीं होता है।
Therefore, as we are instructing you, try your best to marry a wife and have a son. O son! You are our recourse and this will bring us the greatest good."
इसलिए, जैसा कि हम आपको निर्देश दे रहे हैं, एक पत्नी से विवाह करने और एक बेटा पैदा करने की पूरी कोशिश करें। हे वत्स आप हमारा सहारा हैं और इससे हमारा सबसे बड़ा भला होगा।"

जरत्कारुरुवाच न दारान्वै करिष्यामि सदा मे भावितं मनः भवतां तु हितार्थाय करिष्ये दारसंग्रहम्
Jaratkāru replied: "I have always resolved never to have a wife. But I will take a wife for the sake of your welfare.
जरत्कारु ने उत्तर दिया: "मैंने हमेशा से यह संकल्प किया है कि मैं कभी पत्नी नहीं बनाऊंगा। लेकिन मैं आपके कल्याण के लिए एक पत्नी लूंगा।"

समयेन च कर्ताहमनेन विधिपूर्वकम् तथा यद्युपलप्स्यामि करिष्ये नान्यथा त्वहम्
O ancestors! If I get a girl under my conditions, I will marry her according to the prescribed rites.
हे पितरों! यदि मेरी शर्तों पर मुझे लड़की मिल गई तो मैं उससे विधि-विधान से विवाह करूंगा।

सनाम्नी या भवित्री मे दित्सिता चैव बन्धुभिः भैक्षवत्तामहं कन्यामुपयंस्ये विधानतः
Her name has to be the same as mine and her relatives have to willingly bestow her on me as a gift.
उसका नाम मेरे जैसा ही होना चाहिए और उसके रिश्तेदारों को स्वेच्छा से उसे मुझे उपहार के रूप में देना होगा।

दरिद्राय हि मे भार्यां को दास्यति विशेषतः प्रतिग्रहीष्ये भिक्षां तु यदि कश्चित्प्रदास्यति
But who will give a wife to a poor man like me? However, I will accept a girl who is given to me as alms.
लेकिन मुझ जैसे गरीब आदमी को पत्नी कौन देगा? हालाँकि, जो कन्या मुझे भिक्षा में दी जाएगी, मैं उसे स्वीकार कर लूँगा।
O my ancestors! For the sake of relieving you, I shall have offspring from her so that
हे मेरे पूर्वजों! तुझे छुटकारा दिलाने के लिये मैं उस से सन्तान उत्पन्न करूंगा
you may attain the eternal state and be happy there."
तुम शाश्वत अवस्था प्राप्त करो और वहाँ सुखी रहो।''

सूत उवाच ततो निवेशाय तदा स विप्रः संशितव्रतः महीं चचार दारार्थी न च दारानविन्दत
Sauti said: The Brāhmaṇa who was rigid in his vows thereafter roamed the earth in search of a wife. But he did not get a wife.
सौती ने कहा: वह ब्राह्मण जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ था, उसके बाद पत्नी की तलाश में पृथ्वी पर घूमता रहा। लेकिन उन्हें पत्नी नहीं मिली.
One day, the Brāhmaṇa went into a forest and, remembering the words of his ancestors, thrice begged for a woman in a faint voice.
एक दिन, ब्राह्मण जंगल में गया और अपने पूर्वजों के शब्दों को याद करते हुए, उसने तीन बार धीमी आवाज़ में एक महिला के लिए प्रार्थना की।

तं वासुकिः प्रत्यगृह्णादुद्यम्य भगिनीं तदा न स तां प्रतिजग्राह न सनाम्नीति चिन्तयन्
Thereupon, Vāsuki appeared and offered his sister to the Brāhmaṇa for acceptance. But he did not accept her, because he thought she did not have the same name as his.
इसके बाद, वासुकी प्रकट हुए और उन्होंने अपनी बहन को स्वीकार करने के लिए ब्राह्मण के सामने पेश किया। परन्तु उसने उसे स्वीकार नहीं किया, क्योंकि उसे लगा कि उसका नाम उसके जैसा नहीं है।

सनाम्नीमुद्यतां भार्यां गृह्णीयामिति तस्य हि मनो निविष्टमभवज्जरत्कारोर्महात्मनः
The great-souled Jaratkāru had intently thought to himself that he would not accept for a wife someone who did not bear the same name as his.
महान आत्मा जरत्कारु ने मन ही मन सोचा था कि वह ऐसी किसी पत्नी को स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे जिसका नाम उनके जैसा न हो।
Then Jaratkāru, of great austerities and of great wisdom, asked, "O snake! Tell me truthfully, what is your sister's name?"
तब महान तपस्वी और महान बुद्धिमान जरत्कारु ने पूछा, "हे साँप! मुझे सच-सच बताओ, तुम्हारी बहन का नाम क्या है?"
Vāsuki replied: "O Jaratkāru! My younger sister's name is also Jaratkāru. Given by me, accept this slender-waisted one as your wife. O best of the Brāhmana-s! Till now, I have protected her for you. Therefore, take her."
वासुकि ने उत्तर दिया: "हे जरत्कारु! मेरी छोटी बहन का नाम भी जरत्कारु है। मेरे द्वारा दी गई इस पतली कमर वाली को अपनी पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार करो। हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! अब तक, मैंने उसे तुम्हारे लिए सुरक्षित रखा है। इसलिए, उसे ले लो।"

सूत उवाच मात्रा हि भुजगाः शप्ताः पूर्वं ब्रह्मविदां वर जनमेजयस्य वो यज्ञे धक्ष्यत्यनिलसारथिः
Sauti said: O foremost among those who have knowledge of the brāhman! In times gone by, the snakes were cursed by their mother that they would be destroyed in Janamejaya's sacrifice by the one whose charioteer was the wind.
सौती ने कहा: हे ब्रह्मज्ञान वालों में अग्रणी! पुराने समय में, साँपों को उनकी माँ ने श्राप दिया था कि वे जनमेजय के यज्ञ में उस व्यक्ति द्वारा नष्ट हो जायेंगे जिसका सारथी वायु था।
It was to pacify this curse that the best of the snakes married his sister to the great-souled riṣi of good vows.
इस श्राप को शांत करने के लिए ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ सर्पों ने अपनी बहन का विवाह अच्छे व्रत वाले महान ऋषि से किया था।

स च तां प्रतिजग्राह विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा आस्तीको नाम पुत्रश्च तस्यां जज्ञे महात्मनः
Accepting her in accordance with the prescribed rites, he had from her a great-souled son named Āstīka, greatsouled and an ascetic
निर्धारित रीति-रिवाजों के अनुसार उसे स्वीकार करते हुए, उसने उससे आस्तिक नाम का एक महान आत्मा वाला, महान आत्मा वाला और तपस्वी पुत्र प्राप्त किया।

तपस्वी च महात्मा च वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः समः सर्वस्य लोकस्य पितृमातृभयापहः
and learned in the Veda-s and the Vedāṅga-s. He looked on all the worlds impartially and removed the fear from his father and mother.
और वेदों और वेदांगों में सीखा। उन्होंने सभी लोकों को निष्पक्ष दृष्टि से देखा और अपने पिता और माता का भय दूर कर दिया।
Then, after a long time, we have heard that a ruler of men from the Pāṇḍava lineage conducted a great sacrifice known as the snake-sacrifice.
फिर, बहुत समय के बाद, हमने सुना है कि पांडव वंश के एक शासक ने एक महान यज्ञ आयोजित किया था जिसे सर्प-यज्ञ के नाम से जाना जाता है।
When the sacrifice for the destruction of the snakes went on, Āstīka, of great fame, delivered them from the curse.
जब साँपों के विनाश के लिए यज्ञ चल रहा था, तब महान यशस्वी आस्तिक ने उन्हें शाप से मुक्ति दिलाई।

नागांश्च मातुलांश्चैव तथा चान्यान्स बान्धवान् पितॄंश्च तारयामास संतत्या तपसा तथा व्रतैश्च विविधैर्ब्रह्मन्स्वाध्यायैश्चानृणोऽभवत्
Saving his maternal uncles, relatives and other snakes, he then delivered his ancestors by having a son through his ascetic practices. O Brāhmaṇa! He freed himself from their debt through his diverse vows and study of the Veda-s.
अपने मामा, रिश्तेदारों और अन्य साँपों को बचाते हुए, उन्होंने अपनी तपस्या के माध्यम से एक पुत्र प्राप्त करके अपने पूर्वजों को मुक्ति दिलाई। हे ब्राह्मण! उन्होंने अपनी विविध प्रतिज्ञाओं और वेदों के अध्ययन के माध्यम से स्वयं को उनके ऋण से मुक्त कर लिया।
He pleased the gods through sacrifices in which many offerings were made.
उसने बलिदानों के माध्यम से देवताओं को प्रसन्न किया जिसमें बहुत सारी भेंटें दी जाती थीं।
He pleased the sages through his celibacy and his ancestors through his progeny. Jaratkāru and his grandfathers went to heaven.
उन्होंने अपने ब्रह्मचर्य से ऋषियों को और अपनी संतान से अपने पूर्वजों को प्रसन्न किया। जरत्कारु और उनके पितामह स्वर्ग चले गये।
After a long time, the noble Jaratkāru, best of the sages, had a son named Āstīka and after following the righteous path, went to heaven.
लंबे समय के बाद, ऋषियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ, कुलीन जरत्कारु को आस्तिक नाम का एक पुत्र हुआ और वह धर्म मार्ग पर चलने के बाद स्वर्ग चला गया।
I have narrated the account of Āstīka as I heard it. O tiger of the Bhṛgu lineage! Now tell me, what else should I narrate?"
मैंने आस्तिक का वृत्तांत जैसा सुना था वैसा ही सुनाया है। हे भृगु वंश के बाघ! अब बताओ और क्या सुनाऊं?”
